structures

Lightweight and rigid airframe built for durability and precision during high-speed flight. An integrated spar-bulkhead and reinforced control surfaces ensure reliability under load.

propulsion

Powered by a DA-35 engine with an improved muffler and integrated smoke system. The propulsion system can be tuned for desired performance output across all flight attitude and g-loads.

aerodynamics

Designed for speed, stability, and responsiveness. The aircraft meets the 60” wingspan and 63” length limits, with control surfaces and profiles tailored for efficient pylon turns and smooth aerobatic performance.

SPEEDFEST IS AN AIRCRAFT DESIGN COMPETITION AND EXPOSITION. This year, teams are invited to demonstrate their ability to quickly design, develop, and test a high-speed pylon racer. Each team will perform flight demonstrations of their prototypes and host an exposition of their design for industry judges and spectators.

sow requirements

Design and build a high-performance, gas-powered aircraft for Speedfest XIV’s Alpha Class. The goal is to dominate in pylon racing, execute smoke-traced aerobatics, and deliver a production-ready, cost-effective design—all while meeting strict technical and safety requirements.

Design tent poles

  • Minimized frontal area for reduced drag and optimized propulsion system for high speeds.

  • Optimized work schedules and bond cycles.

  • Achieved high strength-to-weight ratio by using lightweight composite materials in the skin and streamlining the fuselage.

  • Capable of performing a Figure 8, Cuban 8, and Immelmann Turn, as well as other advanced maneuvers.

  • 30 seconds of visible continuous smoke.
